To conculde the successful tour of the photographic exhibition
"'Do Not Refreeze' - Photography Behind the Berlin Wall" (Arno Fischer,
Sybille Bergemann, Helga Paris, Evelyn Richter, Maria Sewcz, Erasmus
Schroeter, Gundula Schulze Eldowy, Ulrich Wüst, Ursula Arnold) the German
Embassy London invites to a free public seminar:
"The Development of Democratic Visual Languages Under Dictatorship",
German Ambassador’s Residence, Belgrave Square, London
2 pm – 6 pm, January 21st, 2009
Representing the beginning of a year of celebrating and commemorating the
20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Cultural and Education
Department at the German Embassy, London in collaboration with the
University of Hertfordshire (UH) Galleries and the Goethe Institut are
delighted to announce a free seminar to investigate some of the fascinating
issues around the development of documentary photography in East Germany
between 1949 and 1989. After touring the UK for nearly two years, Do Not
Refreeze UH Galleries’ ground breaking exhibition of photography from the
former East Germany will end its tour after a very successful final showing
at the German Embassy. The seminar speakers so far confirmed are: Matthew
Shaul, Curator of Do Not Refreeze and Head of Programming, UH Galleries will
introduce the project and discuss the inspirations that brought it to the
UK. Evelyn Richter participating artist will answers questions on the
development of her work as social-psychological documentary and her attempts
to evade the ever-present glare of the Stasi, East Germany’s secret police.
Dr Sarah James, Art Writer and Art Historian and contributor to the
exhibition catalogue will give a short lecture on the interactions between
West and East German photography with 'A Medium Divided: On Both Sides of
the Berlin Wall'. There will also be an opportunity to view a remarkable
documentary film Just an Ordinary Life (Ostfotografinnen, DE 2007) focussing
on the lives and careers of three photographers: Gundula Schulze Eldowy,
Helga Paris and Sibylle Bergemann, produced by Berlin based director Pamela
Meyer-Arndt. This free event is a final opportunity for UK audiences to gain
insight into one of the least known chapters in the history of post war
documentary photography and to see one of the most widely discussed
photographic exhibitions to tour the UK in the last ten years.
The event is free of charge, and as places are strictly limited, and are
available on a strictly first come, first served basis, it is advised to
book early.
