As a sociologist whose professional career has been largely based on
fieldwork and analysis of Middle eastern society and politics, and former
professor of sociology and politics at the school of Development Studies,
University of East Anglia, I would like to suggest that Herr Pohoryles is
too easily roused to intemperate words and actions. He is also to be
chided for referring so crudely to 'unqualified and anti-semitic British
colleagues'.
I agree with him that 'boycott is not a solution' - it is a form of
political action. More important, however, than debating terms is to
develop a clear and objective analysis of the current situation in
Palestine/Israel and identify possible political movements towards a
resolution of the long-standing conflict in this region and encourage such
movements. For some, myself included the institutional academic boycott is
a small part of that process of encouraging political (and ideological)
movement.
