Thanks for your eloquent and positive email. I think what you say is
possible, and something we are working towards:
We are meeting with Robin Widdowson, QCA Curriculum Advisor, who has been
kept up to date with the project since its inception. The issues you outline
are already on the agenda for that meeting, amongst other items. The reason
for the meeting is so that the project doesn't lie outside current practice,
but instead aims to inform future thinking (indeed one of the key aims of
the funding stream (see below) is for the project to inform future policy).
Whilst the point where AccessArt intention and QCA intention meet might be
potentially difficult, our aim is to embed, whilst not diluting. We
endeavour to protect the integrity of the project. If it becomes a battle,
then we have a problem...
We are in the process of writing our measures of success, and your comments
are useful. In defence of our funder, the Esmee Fairbairn New Approaches to
Learning Strand ( http://www.esmeefairbairn.org.uk/funding/new-learning.html
), has been very open and not at all didactic in what these measures should
be... Which helps us immensely. I think the confidence of teachers (and
parents) in placing worth or value on the sketchbook mentality is going to
be one of our main concerns, and we can't possibly expect to convince
everyone who comes into contact with the project. But I agree this
confidence would preferably grow through seeing children's development - and
it will be interesting when we ask the teachers themselves what they think
the measures of success should be.
When we've written our measures of success, any one would be welcome to view
and comment - I'll post a link on here.
