The Department of Classics at the University of St Andrews invites
applications for two PhD studentships to be offered beginning in the session
2009-10.  
These will provide a sum of £7,500 per annum, renewable for up to three
years subject to satisfactory performance towards the degree.  
The awards will be open to UK, EU or overseas students.  
They are for study in any area of the Classics.

RESEARCH IN THE SCHOOL OF CLASSICS

The School of Classics at St Andrews is one of the best in the UK.  Our c.20
full-time members of staff are leaders in their fields of research, which
range from the archaeology of the Peloponnese to late antique Latin (see
www.st-andrews.ac.uk/classics/people/index.shtml).  The School has a
dedicated senior language tutor who can support graduate study of Greek and
Latin, and a computing officer who can help with research projects. The
University Library has good classics holdings, and the University is
committed to an expansion of its library services. Several major research
projects are based in the School, including 'Science and Empire' and 'After
Augustine' (both generously funded by the Leverhulme Trust). For further

Research students in Classics become part of a close-knit community.  We aim
to offer desk space in the School to all our research students, as well as
workspace in the Class Library, located in Swallowgate, and in the
University Library. The Postgraduate Seminar and lunch provides a graduate
forum each week. The School Research Seminar hosts senior UK and
international speakers. The School has Erasmus exchange programmes open to
postgraduates with Universities of Cologne and Leiden, a Faculty exchange
with Yale and strong relations with the British Schools in Athens and Rome.

PhD students will be encouraged to undertake paid teaching.  This
opportunity will be beneficial in terms of your future employment.

to be considered for the School of Classics PhD studentships, and a full CV
which includes areas of teaching, as well as research, interest.

Applicants are strongly advised to apply for other sources of funding. For

main sources of award are the Overseas Research Students Award scheme (for
overseas students), and the AHRC (for UK/EU students).  The University has
applied for a block grant of AHRC scholarships, and the School hopes to be
able to offer one scholarship per year to an eligible UK/ other EU student.
 The final award of the School of Classics Postgraduate Studentship will be
to those who do not hold AHRC funding.
