Applications are invited for six ESRC quota awards, as well as six competition
award places, to start in October 2009 at the University of Sussex, based
within our interdisciplinary Social Research Training Consortium. Students will
join Departments or research programmes located in one of three new
interdisciplinary Schools at Sussex – the School of Global Studies, the School
of Law, Politics and Sociology, or the School of Business, Management and
Economics, with students and staff from wide range of disciplinary and
international backgrounds.

Quota awards
• Six quota awards are available:
• Two awards in Contemporary European Studies OR Development
Studies
• One award in Human Geography
• Three interdisciplinary awards in any of the above subjects, plus
Anthropology, International Relations, Politics, Migration Studies, or Sociology.
Candidates can apply either for MSc training in research methods followed by
doctoral training (1+3) or direct entry to the DPhil programme (+3).
Candidates for +3 must have completed an ESRC-recognised doctoral training
programme, or expect to complete such a programme by September 2009.
Competition awards
Applications can be made for ESRC competition awards in the following
consortium subjects:
• Anthropology
• Contemporary European Studies
• Development Studies (in IDS or CDE)
• Human Geography (including Migration Studies)
• International Relations
• Politics
• Sociology
For the Human Geography Quota Award, applications in all areas of Human
Geography will be welcomed, particularly if they fall within one of the
Department's Human Geography research clusters, all of which showed
evidence of world-leading research in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.
These are Economic Geographies of Globalisation and Development;
Geographies of Migration; and Histories, Cultures, Networks. If you are
