I feel the same way. I only use facebook to get info on readings and
maybe publishing.
There is a lot of clamoring for self attention and the desire for mini
celebrity.
There is so much poetry now. So many creative writing programmes in
the UK and US. On one hand it is exciting. On the other hand my
attention span is limited. And online communities don't even come
close to face to face in the flesh meetings and readings. Ditto the
physical (well-made) book.
However, the readability of some books and literary journals online
are getting better. Such as http://issuu.com. I like how the pages
turn. Also, most of the best writing and literary magazines are online
rather than in print. There is a lot of good potential (as always)
with the internet. But yes. Damn attention span.
I do think we need good editors more than ever. Help and direction for
the most interesting books and magazines etc.
