Unseen China -through the lens of British Victorian and 20thC photographers
Wednesday 18th March 2009
7.30pm-9pm
Venue: Powell Lecture Theatre, H.H. Wills Physics Laboratory, Bristol
University, Tyndall Avenue, Bristol.
Free
The cumulative impact of war and revolutions, political turmoil in the
1960s and now accelerating urban redevelopment means that photographic
records of China's past are much rarer than might be thought. Even the most
seemingly innocuous set of family photographs can offer new insights. A
Bristol University-based project is locating new collections of historic
photographs of China, digitising them and making them freely available
online. This talk will complement an exhibition derived from this
collection, sponsored by Bristol University's Centre for Public Engagement,
which will be showing at the Grant Bradley Gallery, Bedminster, in January
and February 2009.
About the speaker: Robert Bickers is Professor of History at Bristol
University, and Co-Director of the British Inter-university China Centre.
He works on the history of British relations with China, and is the author
most recently of "Empire Made Me: An Englishman Adrift in Shanghai"
(Penguin, 2003).
