Summary:
The Division of Population Health invites applications for Medical
Research Council PhD studentships beginning in October 2009. The
Division offers a unique environment to those wishing to undertake
interdisciplinary study and gain exposure to research within
departments pursuing a highly acclaimed international research agenda.
Successful candidates will be based in one of the Research Departments
of the Division, namely Epidemiology and Public Health, Primary Care
and Population Health, Mental Health Sciences, or Infection and
Population Health. They will, however, have the opportunity to benefit
from expertise from across the Division and, depending on the nature
of the project proposed, work across Departments. Applicants should
have (or expect to obtain) a first or upper second class degree in an
appropriate discipline. An MSc in a relevant subject is desirable.
A key strategic aim of the Division of Population Health, along with
colleagues across UCL in basic and clinical sciences, is to create a
pathway that can ensure that new discoveries can be translated into
health technologies and service delivery, to improve the prevention,
diagnosis, treatment and control of disease for patient benefit, in
the UK and abroad. We aim to elucidate and evaluate innovative
methodologies for improved research in clinical and whole populations,
by harnessing the contributions of basic, clinical and population
sciences. This will facilitate health transfer, and provide a focus
within College for capacity building in translational research. The
PhD projects proposals listed below have been selected because of
their inter-Divisional provenance: all include at least one supervisor
from the Division of Population Health, and a co-supervisor from
another Division or Institute in SMLS, or from another Faculty in UCL.
Eligibility: This opening is for 3 year MRC research studentships.
Other studentships are available in some Departments of the Division,
and these are advertised separately. MRC studentships are restricted
to candidates who have been resident in the UK for the past three
years. If you do not fulfil this criterion, you are not eligible for
this scheme.
