University of Exeter
Chair and Lectureship/Senior Lectureship
Mathematical Modelling of the Climate System
The University of Exeter announces two, exciting, permanent academic
posts in mathematical and statistical modelling for weather, climate
and the environment. The new Chair and Lectureship/Senior Lectureship
will be held in the Mathematics Research Institute, 60% of whose
research was rated either world-leading or internationally excellent
in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, and are 2 of 14 posts
currently offered as part of the University's ambitious,
inter-disciplinary 'Climate Change and Sustainable Futures'
initiative.
The new Chair and Lecturer/Senior Lecturer will work closely with
colleagues in the rapidly growing Exeter Climate Systems (XCS)
research centre based within the Mathematics Research Institute

Exeter Climate Systems seeks to develop and apply new mathematical and
statistical methodology to help solve pressing interdisciplinary
problems in weather and climate research. The centre currently has 12
academic staff (4 Chairs, 2 Emeritus Chairs, 2 Lecturers and 4
Research Fellows) many of whom have strong statistical interests in
topics covering spatial statistics, time-series and space-time
modelling, Bayesian modelling, extreme-value theory, multivariate
statistics, and forecast verification. XCS is strongly committed to
developing statistical research, and we welcome applications from
statisticians with interdisciplinary expertise in these and other
relevant areas of environmental statistics.
Some of the many benefits of these posts include the opportunities to:
- grow your world-class research within a research-intensive and
friendly environment with low teaching loads;
- help develop and shape a new ambitious University-wide climate theme
http://www.exeter.ac.uk/research/excellence/keythemes/climate/;
- collaborate with world-leading organisations such as the nearby Met
Office/Hadley Centre;
- live in one of the most pleasant locations within the UK with easy
access to beautiful coastline and moorland.
