The National Film School, IADT and the Graduate School of Creative Arts and Media, Dublin announce filmsense: a one day symposium on Film and Education. Friday 24 April, 2009 at IADT Dún Laoghaire
Call for Papers
In his book The Film Sense (1942) the Russian director Sergei Eisenstein promoted the concept of film as a total experience which engaged the whole individual as a creative, thinking, expressive being. As a teacher of film-making he was committed to the pedagogical value of film, not merely as a sensory and aesthetic experience for the viewer, but as a medium of creativity and individuality for the maker. The National Film School at IADT, Dún Laoghaire and the Graduate School of Creative Arts and Media are hosting a one day symposium which uses the term filmsense to explore the relationship between film as a technical medium, pedagogy and creativity. We are particularly interested in examining how the processes of film-making are taught within national curricula at primary, secondary and tertiary level. We would especially welcome contributions from teachers who have experience of using film in the classroom (either in the making of films or the use of film to teach other subjects).
Cary Bazalgette, the writer, researcher and consultant specialising in media literacy and children's media who previously worked for the British Film Institute as Head of Education is our keynote speaker. We will also be hosting a panel and open session comprised of educators and people from the film industry. We are now accepting submissions for papers for morning parallel sessions.
