Just to flesh out my earlier post on the Tarot more.
I think it is hard (if not impossible) to deny the Tarot (particularly the
Visconti/Sforza Tarot) is, in part at least, based on the Grail Quest of
Parzival, which was a primary repository of Occult lore in the Middle Ages.
Particularly Wolfram's version, which matches the early Tarot most closely.
The lore involved seems to be mainly derived from Celtic traditions and the
Hermetica from Spain.
The Tarocchi began as a game of course, derived from Arabian Naibi but the
authors of many of the Tarocchi packs had definitely coded Occult matter in
to them. While Sforza himself was part of a chain of occult initiation and a
patron of the Rennaissance.
