I too think that questions of grammar and empire are deeply linked.
Wasn't the first Spanish grammar published concomitantly with its
blossoming into empire? &c.
Stepping sideways. there's an essay currently up on Theatre Notes
(which is officially on holiday at the moment) dealing with the
question of Palestinian colonisation, and specifically, with the
destruction of olive trees. As well as being informative to the wider
context, it's also a rather beautiful piece of writing, by USC
