Dear all,
My tuppeneth here.
I'm all in favour of challenging GP notes where my assessment is that
the employee is fit to return in some capacity with OH support. I use
the word challenge as it helps create a professional tension the same
way that we are challenged by HR, managers and employees about our
assessments and encourages dialogue about our own perspectives.
The difficult part of the whole process is getting the employee to
understand and agree that a return to work is appropriate and beneficial
to their recovery. Once this barrier is addressed I usually do not have
any difficulties with the GP or specialist.
To make it work I do the following:
- agree a return to work plan with the employee even if it commences
before their Med 3 expires and obtain consent to write to the GP
- write to the GP or treating specialist informing them of the reason
for the OH assessment, my findings, recommendations about a return to
work plan and the support and supervision they may receive whilst at
work including access to physio, counselling etc.
- invite the GP to call or write to offer additional information to
either support or alter my plan
- implement the plan
- sometimes write to the GP again to let them know the outcome of the
return.
I hardly ever write to request a GP medical report but if the GP wishes
to write to me following my own letter as a professional to professional
courtesy then I'm happy.
