Dear Colleagues,
A reminder of the next talk on the Philosophy and History of Medicine
seminar series at the University of Bristol:
Wednesday 4 February
Dr. Clare Hickman (Bristol)
'To Build a City for Health: The Role of Gardens and Green Spaces in the
Victorian Utopian City'
Abstract: Concerns of the role of environment in health and disease
influenced the ideas of utopian visionaries towards the end of the
nineteenth century in Britain. This seminar will look at the representation
of these beliefs in relation to green spaces, including gardens and parks,
with particular reference to 'Hygeia: A City of Health' (1876) written by a
practising doctor, Sir Benjamin Ward Richardson. Other texts to be discussed
include William Morris's post-industrial utopian novel, 'News from Nowhere'
(1890) and Ebenezer Howard's 'To-morrow: A Peaceful Path to Real Reform'
(1898). The impact of these texts on town planning in the twentieth century
will also be explored.
The talk begins at 5pm.
