To: The Competition Commission.
I wonder if you can advise me?
I am a GP working in the NHS, and as such have to use NHSMail, the
email system which is part of the NHS Connecting for Health programme.
I work extensively from home and have for some years used an Apple Mac
computer, as this meets my needs better that a PC running Windows.
When working from home I need access to my email via a system that
allows me to keep it managed and synchronised.
I have just received notification that the NHSMail system is being
moved to a new version, and that this version will require me to use a
PC with MS Windows in order to access it via IMAP or POP email
systems.
It seems to me that this is a restraint on all those wishing to use
alternative operating systems (eg Mac OSX or Linux).
The apparent excuse that this is a security issue is plainly spurious,
as access from mobile devices (eg the Apple iPhone) is still
supported. I note with interest that mobile devices is a sphere in
which Microsoft is not a serious contender.
I would be grateful if could advise on whether this might be the sort
of issue that you investigate.
Many thanks
Yours faithfully
