'Flexicurity and the Future of the European Social Model'
Launch seminar, 29 January 2009, Tilburg University
The Research Institute on Flexicurity, Labour Market Dynamics and Social
Cohesion at Tilburg University (ReflecT) has officially started 1 January 2009.
Therefore we have the pleasure to invite you to the launch seminar of
ReflecT on 29 January 2009, titled: 'Flexicurity and the Future of the
European Social Model'.
We are looking forward to welcoming you that day.
Theme of the seminar
There is a strong awareness in Europe of a distinct Social Model in
comparison to other parts of the world. A widespread and urgent debate
exists on the question how to preserve and adjust this model in the age of
globalization, the impact of demographic tendencies and the current
financial crisis. Can ‘flexicurity’, a concept that is high on the the
policy and academic agenda, serve as a guiding concept and form the basis
for successful strategies at the European, national and local level?
Speakers
Key note speeches will be delivered by Mr. Vladimir Špidla , the European
Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities,
Mr. Piet-Hein Donner , Minister of Employment and Social Affairs of the
Netherlands and Mr. Ruud Vreeman , Mayor of the City of Tilburg.
In the afternoon session the following top scholars from partner
universities abroad, working together in the RISE Network, will give key
note lectures on the theme of the seminar: professor Tito Boeri (Economics,
Bocconi University, Italy), professor Csilla Kollonay (Law, Central European
University, Hungary) and professor Thomas A. DiPrete (Sociology, Columbia
University, United States).

About ReflecT
The research area of ReflecT can be defined as: the challenges and issues
that arise from on the one hand the tendencies towards and pleas for
increased flexibility, dynamism and efficiency of labour markets, employment
relations and the work organisation and on the other hand the need for
preserving or developing social cohesion, participation and commitment in
our societies, by means of social protection, security and solidaristic
social organisation.
