Here at LJMU we have been using Wimba classroom for 6 months. Not really seen illuminate
Plus points are:
It has been a real shot in the arm for distance learning programmes. Staff catch on quickly and see the technological development of courses less of a boundary
The software side is fairly reliable
Students really enjoy it when it is reliable. We have reports of much more interaction than in traditional classrooms.
Minus
Does need training and 'hand holding' to get staff feeling confident and to get them more independent.
Hardware has been an issue. Best to get particular rooms with machines tested and set up, changing video cameras and headsets can cause issues
Wimba comes with a wizard to test users machines, get students to test machines early on before sessions so you can deal with problems.
Archive first sessions to allow students that can't log in something as a fall back.
Wimba tech help is okay but some of the answers for students have been very complex and use a lot of jargon. This can make students even more frustrated.

Subject: Wimba or Elluminate
Greetings All
Here at Canterbury Christ Church we are looking at using either Wimba or
Elluminate and I was wondering what experience anybody has had of either
product?
What are the plus and minus points?
How easy staff and students found them to use?
And the levels of support offered by both companies to both students and
staff.
Thanks in advance for any replies
Chris
