This works fine for me with SPM5 on 64-bit RedHat Linux and MATLAB 2007b.

Subject: [SPM] SPM5 - Cannot read NII files created with MIPAV
Good morning,
I am performing a number of image processing steps in MIPAV and saving out
image volumes in NII format (either 32 bit float or 64 bit double). I can
read both of these images types with the "nifti" command in Matlab as
suggested by previous posts to this list.
My problem is that when I try to view these images with display (in SPM5), I
see a white screen triplanar view with the text "Image "<filename here>" can
not be resampled." displayed in the Matlab window. If I use SPM normalize,
the process halts with the error message "??? Error using ==? spm_slice_vol
Bad image handle dimensions".
I posted a sample (gziped) volume to:
https://jshare.johnshopkins.edu/xythoswfs/webui/_xy-2962414_1
I am using 64 bit Ubuntu 8.10 linux, Matlab 2008b, and the newest SPM5
download.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Bennett
