At the Department of Sociology and the European Data Center for Work and
Welfare(EDACwowe), Tilburg University, The Netherlands
The EUROPEAN DATA CENTER for WORK and WELFARE (EDACwowe), based in the
Department of Sociology and part of the EU FP6 Network of Excellence
"Reconciling Work and Welfare", is the online META-DATA-SHELL for European
research and policy making in the areas of work and welfare. Its website
gives information on and direct links to comparative and national,
quantitative and qualitative data on work and welfare and closely related
fields.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The post-doc will act as daily manager of EDACwowe (about 25% of time) with
tasks relating to:
- coordination of the work of part-time (student)assistants
- external contacts (e.g. IT department of Tilburg university, external
data base managers, REWCOWE management, strands and members, etc.)
- organisation of EDACwowe initiated (international) meetings
- (re)presentation of EDACwowe at (international) conferences and seminars
- monitoring the web for new data bases
- coordinating IT and website related tasks
- promotion of EDACwowe in academic and policy circles
The other part of the job (about 75% of time) will consist of research
activities:
The post-doc will develop and coordinate the EDACwowe 2010 Data
Demonstration Project, which will take the form of a four day course on
data bases and multi-level analysis of data for phd-students, in
cooperation with EDACwowe staff from Tilburg University and SFI, Copenhagen
(www.sfi.dk).
He/she will also develop and coordinate the EDACwowe Tensions Data Project,
in cooperation with EDACwowe staff and members of RECWOWE strands. The
project's aim is to develop and carry out 4 multi-level analyses of factors
influencing people's reported experiences of tensions in the field of work,
care and welfare. Each analysis will focus on a specific tension, and
analyse a specific set of variables. The exact research questions, as well
as the dependent and independent variables, will be developed in close
cooperation with representatives from the 4 RECWOWE strands, so that the
analyses can contribute to a wider understanding of work-welfare tensions.
The data sets to be used are EU comparative and include e.g. ESS, EVS,
ISSP,Eurobarometer, EU-silc, EWST and others.
REQUIREMENTS
We look for a social scientist who:
- has successfully completed (or is about to complete) a PhD-thesis of high
quality
- has substantial (EU) comparative knowledge of welfare state institutions
and of social policies
- has substantial knowledge of and expertise in the application of
techniques for the analysis of large-scale survey data, especially in
multi-level analyses
- has a track record of very good study results throughout his or her
academic career
- has articles published (or accepted for publication) in international,
refereed journals
- has a cooperative attitude and good interpersonal communication skills.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
The post-doctoral researcher's position offers a two-and-half-year
full-time contract, commencing preferably March 1, 2009. The salary for a
full-time contract ranges between ¤ 2379,- and ¤ 4374,- gross a month
(UFO scale researcher 4-3).
