Dear Kim and others,
The list was begun for a UK group who first gathered around the performative in soc sci about three years ago and wanted to keep up with activities. Because this all started in a more formal way in the UK (and I am in the UK, at least for now) it is natural that information comes from here. Still the USA has the most subscribers now.....
There is no problem with posting announcements that happen to be local to another geographic area and it is quite easy to post them. This is one way that we can be aware of what is developing elsewhere.
This is not a discussion list in the sense of long threads on subjects; most prefer to be informed but not inundated with lots of emails. At least that is the feedback that I get back from time to time. Taking a 'conversation' off list often works best, particularly when it becomes quite limited to only a few people.
Many on the list have benefited from the information posted over the past three years, including getting articles accepted, making conference presentations, making links with others doing similar work, finding support for grant applications and tenure and so on.
I hope to maintain this as the main purpose of the list. There are other lists that are more conversational, if that is what some are looking for.
Cheers,
Kip

Dear Performative People,
This thread, prompted by Kim, is very interesting. (And, as usual, I really appreciated John's input. I'm not sure I ever thought there was a unified purpose, other than to be somehow enriched and inspired by each other's work.)
I never thought about most of the opportunities for events and involvement being focused on the UK; I just thought they were generating more opportunities and events! (And I feel inspired and heartened by that.) I must say, I paused before posting the release of my new audio CD last month, but then considered that it was appropriate as one manifestation of performative work. And it's available worldwide via cdbaby.com. (Though now that I think from that angle, I don't post my work that is only regionally available, but Kip often does. Hmmm.)
I wonder if I (and others) am being too timid at offering up ideas/concepts/work that might provide good fodder for discussion. Perhaps this is one of the places we learn to discuss performative work because we've had little practice elsewhere!
One of the things I've become very interested in, for example, is the carbon footprint of the touring artist. And, attendant to that, the various "performative" ways that people who book touring artists (i.e. universities, theatres, festivals) construct that issue as not belonging to them, even though we (the artists) must often react to other's schedules. I'm writing a brief (non-academic) article about this issue now for the Green Theatre Initiative in New York. Is this an appropriate forum in which to raise issues related to performativity and performance? (Or am I, ironically, to embedded in the performance world for my themes to be of interest to a performative social science group! ~wink)
What are we doing here? And why aren't we doing more of it?
In partnership,
Kimberly Dark

Dear List members
I guess am one of the 'Kiwi 5'! I agree with some of Kim's comments about relevance to the antipodes. Tahnks Kip and others for your input.
I and suggest that we, antipodeans, form a little sub group of interest. I am happy to coordinate this in the first instance. We can see where it goes from there.
I am a Senior Tutor and PhD student in the Department of Geography, Tourism and Environmental Planning at the University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand. The topic of my thesis is around digital storytelling as a research method. I am also looking at digital storytelling in the context of emotion, place and memory as a sub theme.
I would be very keen to hear from some local people and talk further and deeper about our mutual interests, and how we can perhaps collaborate, or at least exchange ideas, in a more localised forum. I have recently presented a paper at a local conference on one aspect of my work and am happy to share it with interested people.
Best wishes

The mystery country ??? at the bottom usually gets a response from someone!
As far as NZ goes, you only are five, so I suggest getting to know one another!
As far as I am concerned, a former lover of mine has recently returned to his native NZ recently after a life in show biz in the UK and is living in a shack on the North Island. When things get too tough here (and they do!), I think, would he accept me as at least a lodger??? I could then lie around on a beach somewhere and pontificate on things performative!
Never know!

Kip

Hi All
Thanks to you Heather and others for sharing about your work from the other side of the globe with us today. I have just sourced your MIECAT site, Heather as you suggested and found some very interesting, inspirational research texts that have proved invaluable for queries around movement and lived experience that I happen to be working on in my Dance Studio located in a psychiatric setting in Belfast, N.I. this very morning!!!!
Just goes to prove how invaluable a site like this can be. So let's maximise and utilise our shared creativity. I work as a dancer/researcher primarily using performance as a democratic voice/research experience in health. I am also Artistic Director of two integrated Dance Companies that have evolved from Healthcare Environments.
Keep the knowledge creatively circling the globe!
Kind regards
Jenny Elliott

Hi all!
I haven't been long on this listserve so don't really know what its purposes are, whether it's mainly sharing information or discussing issues - or both. I'm wondering if members have introduced themselves and their interests? Perhaps Kim's comment is a challenge for us to come out of the woodwork and be seen!
So me, I am Kim and Jean's "neighbour" living and working in Melbourne, Australia, though I also have been a social worker in New Zealand. I have absolutely no sense of being "in the colonies" - there's some great work happening at this end of the world! It's up to us to share it not only with the world but with each other. For that reason and like Jean, I'm happy to hear of the existence of others with similar interests who are not on the other side of the world - and happy to converse.
After working for more than 20 years as a dance therapist (particular working with people with dementia), I now lecture at the Melbourne Institute for Experiential and Creative Arts Therapy, where we teach a form of inquiry which is multi-modal and can be applied in therapeutic, educational or research contexts. Check out our websitewww.miecat.org.au<http://www.miecat.org.au/>
So Kim, maybe your message will spur others on this side of the world to network, which I think would be very positive. And of course also network across the world.
Kind regards!
Heather
