A few years ao, I read a wonderful (if sad) monograph on workers from one of the Baltic states who were called out to help deal with the aftermath of Chernobyl. It was largely their testimony. Their narrating of the event was part of their way coming to terms with it. They accepted that nothing could be done about their exposure and its potential effects but they asked for monitoring, again feeling that knowing as much as they could about themselves and their health status was part of their acceptance: it helped them to face their uncertain future. I believe that 'placebo' dismisses an important and powerful part of our humanity.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Accidental asbestos exposure
Hi list,
I have been asked to do some follow-up for a group of engineers who were accidentally exposed to asbestos during a maintenance procedure at the weekend. I am not sure what to suggest, I have already said that anything I do is likely to be placebo rather than actually picking up or preventing any problems. The company are keen for me to do something (I managed to restrain them from calling in doctors and chest x-rays). Does anyone have any suggestions apart from questionnaire/lung function test/nice chat with the nurse?
All ideas gratefully received, thanks
Siān
