Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] migration by portfolio " annotation"
I agree...
Whilst I realise the importance to our profession to have appropriately
trained staff giving good advise... is a part 3 registration really the be
all and end all to achieve this....I am old enough to remember when the
academics took over the asylum in general nursing...and look at health
care standards now and the numbers leaving nursing??

Diane and others
This may sound pompous and opinionated and comes from someone who did
their OHNC in 1990 and is definitely not on the third part of the
register. I have though (so I’m told ) made a reasonable job of employing
lots of people in the last 10 years or so on both an employed and
subcontract basis and I couldn’t care less whether a prospective employee
is on the third part of the register or not and however it might be
annotated. A couple of the best people I took on didn’t even have an OH
qualification (they subsequently did the course and became more qualified
than me). I have also employed OTs and physios into OH/case management
roles. I look for a good CV, a good background and working experience and
a good performance at interview.
Where I may well catch myself out one day is that the requirement to be on
the third part of the register seems to be becoming the norm in some
areas. One of the large providers currently has this as a criteria for
recruitment into a team of subcontract OHAs for carrying out work station
assessments. So in answer to one of your questions it is probably
starting to make a difference. The subsequent question is whether it
should. Faced with the decision to employ you not on the third part or
someone with less than your experience who is, I know what my decision is
likely to be.
A further question – and one to set the cat scampering with even sharper
claws - is whether any of this should be relevant at all. In a world of
multidisciplinary OH where we have physios, OTs, Vocational rehab
consultants etc, shouldn’t we be thinking about an independent Institute
of Occupational Health and Welfare to govern our collective practice and
questioning whether we should still be looking to the NMC for this at
all.
A Happy Christmas and New Year to all.

Hello list,
This may put the cat among the pigeons....
I have sucessfully submitted a portfolio and I am at the stage where my
name is to be put on the third part of the register. The NMC has asked me
if I want it "annotated" that is, after SCPHN put " OH ".
I am of two minds on this . One is it will indicate that I practice and
have expertise in OH. But then again anyone who need to know that ,(eg
prospective employers ) would have a look at my CV and figure that out
fairly quickly.
Alternatively should I emphasise that I have satisifeid the NMC that I can
practices as a Public Health Nurse (omitting the OH), which seems to be
the way that the world is drifting.
Does it make any difference at all?
Many OH jobs require that you are on the third part of the register, which
I will be, whatever I chose. Some ask for a qualification in OH which I
have, although not one recognised by the NMC.
Anyone got any strong views? Particularly those who might want to employ
me in the future :)
Cheers
