Yes an interesting topic indeed. I gave up artistic practice more or less in
1979 when I became an editor and critic and definitely when I became a
curator in 1987. This is an-old fashioned approach but it suits my
temperament. That doesn't mean I reject the artist-curator as a model - just
that it is not my model. However, one way of avoiding the abject aspects of
self-inclusion or inclusion of one's partner in a curated show is complete
openness, to lay out exactly the fact that one has an interest and explain
why it is correct now do take this approach, rather than slipping the
choice in under the table. The reason has to be an important one- that this
is the major contributor to a certain field etc. My experience tell me
though, as a curator your right to curate intuitively is going to be
compromised when favoritism is suspected. Leave your mates out!
