Dear all
Thanks for the interesting discussion.
I wanted to add a personal note to this topic.
As an artist / academic who wanted to encourage a greater understanding of
electronic art (in a very isolated part of the world, Perth W.A.), I
instigated the Biennale of Electronic Art Perth in 2000. The themes were
based on asking a research question which BEAP would endeavor to answer.
Thus in 2002 I became both a director and curator without any previous
experience in either area.
In relationship to Andreas' initial question, for BEAP 2004 I gathered
together 5 curators (who were all artists) and the first decision that we
made was that as curators we would not present our own work. (This was
particularly difficult in the of Bio difference exhibition for BEAP 04 which
Oron Catts curated as he was one few people with experience in curating bio
art and also a major artist in the field.).
I developed thematic research questions for BEAP 02,04,07 and have spent
time reflecting on the ramifications of this.
What is the core experience needed to curate?
Is it any individuals need to gather together evidence of a concept and
present it up for public discourse?
In directing BEAP I did not give up my art practice or being a full time
academic and as Simon suggested, it can be an enriching experience.
>critical purchase in relation to my own work.
I thought that Geoff's idea of a transparent curating approach was
interesting but needed to be relevant to the concept driving the project.
'Vanity curating' of media art has become one of many approaches that we as
an audience need to navigate when viewing art.
Seasons greetings
All the best
Paul
