Hi List, I don't often come on but do read certain areas of the e mails,
when you are talking about a foot way, are you referring to what is known as
a footrill, this is the entrance to a drift mine, it could be coal, or iron
ore or lead etc. in the next village to where I live in Nottinghamshire the
village name is Cossall, they had believed to be the first coal mine in
Nottinghamshire dated circa 1283.
This was by way of a footrill and was a drift mine as I was saying, I know
that in later years there were the normal big wheels to vertical shafts but
I don't know too much about them as I only saw them at Cossall for a while
before they closed it down.
We have several drift mines and also open cast mines in the area for both
coal and iron ore, from the past, of course there are none now, there was
one in Awsworth on a piece of land called shiloh but they are all long since
gone. We also had bell pits here
