Whilst transcribing the Tavistock Gazette newspapers onto my computer I
came across the following regarding the man engine of Devon Great Consols:
Devon Great Consols: - Mining Accident – William Northcott, a miner of this
place, had one of his ribs broken, by the falling of a large piece of wood at the
Wheal Maria section of these mines on Monday last.
On the same day, at Wheal Josiah, John Bray, of Calstock, was severely
bruised by falling from the steps of the man-engine, whilst ascending to
surface.
Tavistock Gazette: Friday 22nd May 1868.
Hope this is beneficial to someone.
Kindest regards Chris Kelland
