Hi,
Thanks for the response, this Footway Piece is east of Cothercott, at
Sheppon Fields and is on the side of a valley which leaves matters a little
more open.

Subject: Re: [MINING-HISTORY] field names
Hi Mike,
I would have thought it could quite easily mean that the field contained
a footpath or track.
I am guessing that this was one of the fields in the Pontesford,
Shopshire, coal mining area, as I am familiar with the name Footway
Piece there.
Because of the fairly flat topography in that area, and with the coal
seams being at some depth & tilting away to the north-east, I would have
thought there would be no opportunity for near-horizontal adits. Any
document I have seen concerning this coalfield indicates "pits" being
used.
Kind Regards

Subject: field names
In a mining area I would suspect that a field named Footway Piece
(c1843) was a field which contained or had contained an adit; barite and
copper occur not far away, is it reasonable to assume a previously
unknown mine or is there another less interesting derivation of the
name.
Seasons greetings to all.
