The Foundation for the Sociology of Health & Illness (the charity which owns
the journal Sociology of Health & Illness) seeks applications from
sociology, social policy, medical, nursing, and other departments for this
award of £8,000 p.a. to the student and £3,000 p.a. to the department for a
PhD on any medical sociological topic. The university department must
undertake to provide other necessary costs to supplement the part-funding
and to provide suitable research training.
An application must be made by would-be supervisors (as with the ESRC case
awards scheme) by the end of January, for a decision by the Foundation by
the end of February. The Foundation expects to make two awards on this
occasion. Successful departments may then make their own arrangements to
select suitable students.
Application forms and guidance notes are available from the Foundation
website: www.shifoundation.org.uk
