If the school was associated with a church, with a tradition of clerical
masters, a schoolmaster described as a clerk was almost certainly in holy
orders. If so, he is likely to have been a graduate of Oxford or
Cambridge. He may have officiated in surrounding parishes as a substitute
for the permanent beneficed ministers there, which would have supplemented
his income, since small schools usually provided limited pay.
