Many thanks to all who replied to my earlier email asking about the
provision of Welcome Packs for new academic staff. Here's a brief
summary of the responses.
Personal contact was recommended by the majority of Lis-Link
respondents.
"...our Subject Librarians themselves are our best marketing asset, and
we encourage initial, personalised face-to-face meetings with new
academic staff in as many occasions as possible. There is also the
valuable self-perpetuating cascade effect, where existing staff will
actively recommend our [Subject Librarians] to incoming faculty staff."
"[Personal contact]...beats pieces of paper and web information for the
most part."
Specific initiatives included:
* Participation in university/faculty induction programmes
* Meeting new academic staff via regular faculty committees
* Inviting groups of new academic staff to visit the Library for
an induction and optional tour
* Arranging one-to-one meetings with new academics to discuss
teaching/research needs
Other initiatives included:
* Business cards for individual librarians to distribute to new
academic staff
* Electronic/print Library newsletters
* Blogs tailored to individual university faculties providing
relevant information for new academic staff
Thanks again.
