italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Thank you very much, Claudia and Gloria, for your comments. You have
respectfully disagreed, and I thank you for your thoughts. I think we
shall have to agree to disagree on this matter.
It's true that many people on the list (including me) agree
completely with the sentiments and call to action found in Angela
Corrias's message, and that also many of us (less so, me) actively
research the moral and political situation in contemporary Italy. My
point is that we should be undertaking such 'field' research and
seeking such news in the 99.9999999999999999% of the remainder of
cyberspace beyond our list, and reserve the use of our list for
observations and discussions on such issues -- and not for using the
list as a noticeboard. If it were necessary to contact
intellectuals .... well, a cynic might say that a list of scholars
might not be an appropriate place to find them.
:-)
Kidding aside, as noted on our list just a few days ago, all one
needs to do is go to
http://www.sis.ac.uk/StaffList/stafflist2008.pdf
for details of *everyone* who teaches and is engaged in postgraduate
studies in UK (and Irish!!) Italian departments. (The list at the
above-cited URL includes many people who are not members of our
mailing list, by the way. Shame on them. :-0 )
Ironically, I think many of us enjoyed Angela's post precisely
because posts of this nature are such a rarity on the list. If we
were not to exercise our collective control in such matters, the list
(unmoderated as it is) would probably be full of messages not only
for unimportant matters, but also for silly ones and spam.
Among the terms of disapproval sent my way over the years (I created
the list when I was at Exeter, in the mists of time that were 5
December 1996) 'calligrafista' is not the worst, and it is one that I
would bear. (Indeed, it has an nonchalantly quasi-sophisticated air;
I can hear it now: 'Ferzoco, calligrafista!'.) That said, I hope it
is the worst I will hear for some time; and if it is not, I hope you
will direct any missives proffering them directly to me, offlist.
Thank you again.
George
