Interesting article in this week's BMJ: "This allergies hysteria is
just nuts" by a professor at Harvard. He points out that although 3.3
million Americans are allergic to nuts (that's 1 in 100) and 6.9
million to seafood, serious allergic reactions to foods cause just
2,000 hospitalisations a year (out of more than 30 million
nationwide). And only 150 people (children and adults) die each year
from all food allergies combined. By comparison (USA figures) 50 die
from bee stings, 100 from lightning strikes and 45,000 from car
crashes.
If his figures are comparable to the UK then 30 children and adults
will die from all food allergies combined. It's a fair bet that the
number of cases of Death By Abidec is somewhere in the region of zero.
But one can't be too careful. Lock up your peanuts!
