Dear all,
Next week, there will be a talk in our research seminar series on:
"Looking at photographs of Jews in the Holocaust exhibition in the Imperial War Museum",
by Dr K. Hannah Holtschneider (University of Edinburgh).
Location: Newcastle University, Old Library Building, Research Beehive, room 2.20;
Time/Date: 11th December 2008, 16:00 - 17:00.
The paper looks at the representation of the Holocaust in museums, using the IWM as a case study. The focus is on photographs of victims, an important question being how the exhibition establishes the Jewishness of the majority of the victims of the Holocaust. Since photography was a propaganda tool of the Nazis, many images of victims were taken by perpetrators of the Holocaust for official as well as private purposes. What does the employment of victimiser-photography mean for the interpretation of the identities of victims in Holocaust exhibitions? This question is pertinent, as such exhibitions have the aim of providing a 'comprehensive' educational experience about this significant event of the 20th century to their visitors.
All welcome!
Best wishes,
Beate
