Dear All,
Below is an announcement of a lecture on Monday
the 8th of December 2008 at Loughborough
University, organised by the East Midlands Geotechnical Group (EMGG):
Date : Monday 8th December 2008, 6.00 for 6.30pm
Subject : "Geothermal energy the best of the renewable sources? "
Venue: Room J002, Edward Herbert Building (EHB),
Loughborough University (Map shown at the
following link : http://www.lboro.ac.uk/about/findus.html ).
Light refreshments will be available from 6.00 pm.
Speakers : John Patch (Roger Bullivant) and Matthew Wrate (Arup)
Abstract :
The first part of the talk will seek to explore
the issues associated with drawing heat from the
ground and, indeed, dumping it back again when
not required. The main sources to be covered will
be loops in boreholes, and in piles. These are
known as closed loop systems and comment will be
made about open loop systems as well.
The presentation will be practical and will use
case study material throughout. Samples will be available to view.
The second part of the talk will cover the
following subjects related to Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP): -
- A brief history of GSHP’s and their current use
- Review the advantages and disadvantages of different types of heat exchanger
- Comparison of cost and carbon emissions versus
alternative energy sources (renewable and fossil fuels)
- Drivers for growth in GSHP demand
- Key barriers to growth in GSHP demand
- Example installations
