CERN, the world leading Particle Physics laboratory has its
headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and is starting the LHC, the
largest scientific instrument ever designed. With 2500 staff and 10000
scientific visitors the laboratory is home to a vibrant international
scientific community.

CERN has recently taken a leading role in the Open Access movement. It
manages an institutional and subject repository of 1-million records
digital library including scientific manuscripts, an archive of CERN
documents, educational multimedia content and much more. Beyond green
Open Access, CERN is promoting the SCOAP3 project, an Open Access
Publishing initiative. SCOAP3 aims to convert to Open Access the
entire literature in Particle Physics in partnership with funding
agencies, libraries, and publishers worldwide. CERN interest in Open
Access business models now include a new project called SOAP.

SOAP (Study of Open Access Publishing) is a project being negotiated
for financing by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework
Program. Partners of the SOAP consortium are CERN, the coordinator,
the Max Plank Society, the UK Science and Technology Facilities
Council and the publishing companies BioMed Central, Sage, and
Springer. The project is expected to have a duration of two years,
starting in March 2009. Its objective is the study of Open Access
business models and a comprehensive survey of the attitudes towards
Open Access of researchers across all disciplines. SOAP will deliver
evidence on the potential of sustainable forms of Open Access
Publishing.

Conditional to the final availability of funding, CERN is looking for
a dynamic, enthusiastic and motivated person to play a leading role in
the SOAP project, in collaboration with all other partners. The person
will be based in Open Access section of the CERN Library, in Geneva,
collaborating with 4 other colleagues involved in the SOAP project.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for:
	. The management of the SOAP project
	. The analysis of a large-scale survey of the attitudes towards Open

Access publishing of researchers in a wide spectrum of disciplines
	. The study of the potential of different business models for Open
Access publishing in the light of the needs and expectations of
research communities

Your profile:
	. You have a sound understanding of the mechanisms and economics of

scientific publishing
	. You are familiar with Open Access in general and business models
for Open Access Publishing in particular
	. Experience in the management of small projects and/or being
conversant with the administration of FP7 projects is an advantage
	. Experience with the analysis of large data samples collected by
user surveys is an asset
	. You hold a MSc or higher diploma and you have less than 10 years
professional experience after the MSc.
	. You are a citizen of one of the CERN Member states (Austria,
Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France,
Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland,
Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom).

What we offer:
	. Contract duration: One year with a possibility of extension for a

second year. The start date is fixed to March 1st, 2009, subject to
the successful conclusion of the negotiations with the European
Commission
	. Financial conditions: You will be employed as a CERN Fellow with a

stipend calculated individually, depending on qualification and
experience. CERN stipends are very competitive and tax-free and for
this post could range between 75'000 and 90'000 Swiss Francs per
annum. Fellows may be entitled to an additional installation grant,
family allowance and child allowance. We also offer help with finding
suitable accommodation.
	. Leave: Fellows are entitled to 2.5 days paid leave per month, plus

two weeks at Christmas and a few other local holidays.
	. Insurance: Fellows have access to CERN's comprehensive health
insurance scheme for themselves and their dependents.
	. Travel expenses: Fellows are entitled to travel expenses for
themselves and their family upon joining and leaving CERN.
