Choices and Constraints in childcare provision: users' perspectives
Susan Purdon (National Centre for Social Research) Anna Upson (DCSF), and
Lorraine Dearden (Institute of Fiscal Studies)
In 2004, the government launched its 10 Year Child Care strategy which aimed
to ensure that parents were better supported in their choices around work
and family responsibilities, that childcare was available to all families,
and was flexible in its provision. Using data from the Families and Children
Study (DWP) and the Childcare and Early Years Survey of Parents (DCSF) this
meeting will consider factors that affect decision-making around work and
childcare from the perspective of users.
Susan Purdon will focus on the rationale, question design and analysis
undertaken on behalf of DWP for the longitudinal Families and Children Study
(FACS). The eighth wave of FACS included a new questionnaire module aimed at
improving the data collected on the choices and constraints around work and
parenting. The module incorporated a card-sort exercise, with mothers
sorting statements about work and parenting into 'large' and 'small'
factors. Anna Upson will focus on parent's decisions around using childcare
and how these are influenced by their attitudes towards parenting, work and
the socio-demographic characteristics of the family, using the 2007
Childcare and Early Years Survey of Parents. Lorraine Dearden will act as
discussant.
Rosalyn Harper will chair the seminar. Attendance is free but
pre-registration is recommended. You can register by email:
