Dear Allstat
I recently came across the guideline that one should not apply the Mann-Whitney test if the larger of the two sample inter-quartile ranges was in excess of twice the smaller. A quick simulation investigation of the scenario where both populations sampled are normal with equal variances suggests that the guideline is totally inappropriate. Has anyone come across the guideline or any comments?
Best Wishes
