IHWTE Committee Member, and PETT Trustee John Whitwell writes in the Times:
"Lives Remembered: Mike Soper"
"John Whitwell writes: I knew Mike Soper (obituary, Dec 4) from 1985-99
during the period that I was principal of the Cotswold Community, a
residential therapeutic community and school for seriously emotionally
disturbed and antisocial boys. The school was situated on a 350-acre
farm and Mike was an unpaid consultant to the farm and a member of the
managing committee. He had a very clear grasp of the therapeutic
benefits of the farm and fought for its survival when under threat of
losing land to gravel extraction. Although his initial involvement was
for his farming expertise, he became increasingly interested in the
therapeutic work with the boys and the importance of education for their
future prospects. He was an approachable person with a warm sense of
humour. "

"28.) Encourage therapeutic communities among other faiths. Some addicts
have difficulty with the Christian focus that pervades many 12-step
recovery programs. Once a licensing and funding formula is developed for
recovery houses, why not encourage temples and other faith-based
communities to tap in to the program by developing their own alternative
treatment communities."
