Hi Alex, Ilja,
pbsnodes -o <WN> will do exactly what you want just fine (it does
not kill running jobs).
setres (and releaseres) are Maui functions, and will only work if
you are running Maui as a scheduler (it does not apply to the
pbs_sched scheduler you get with Torque by default).
