As David seemed keen to work in perl, I thought that he might already be
familiar with CFITSIO from perl, and so wouldn't have to learn some NDF.
It would be far more efficient than text data files.
BTW is IMG available from perl? For those lurking see
http://astro.dur.ac.uk/~pdraper/img/bullet/index.html
That would simplify things further for occasional programmers.
