Hi Tim,
this is a problem with the SIMBAD resolver hosted at ESO. The actual query
used is:
http://archive.eso.org/skycat/servers/sim-server?&o=ngc55
which misses out the sign (there are other NGC objects in the south that
also show this, but oddly not all). I've mailed ESO with a report, so
we'll have to wait and see what happens. In the meanwhile you can switch
the name resolver to NED, that seems to work.
