We have run Matlab and SPM2 and SPM5 on Redhat 5.0 with no problems.
Go with the 64 bit OS and matlab. There is a big speed increase in
some computations, plus 32 bit matlab/linux is limited to only 2 GB of
ram. Unlike windows 64 bit Linux runs great.
