Absolutely. It's an often sardonic play on
romantic and (to him) contemporary popular
culture. The only instance of non-reflexive kitsch in Mahler is his song
Ich hab'ein glühend Messer from the
Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, composed in his
mid-twenties. The other three songs are wonderful.
