Ken Yes talking to the cat is a highlight of the day even if it is
monosybllabic ? VB

ROUTINE
5:30 AM awake
curse my day
exercise a decrepit prostate
wish the long disease would end
("Dear Cousins, called back")
but no time to reflect
only to do the shower
shave, dress, coffee,
drive to meet my classes
hear myself talk
to tuition-paying statuary
deflect forbidden thoughts
of forbidden fruit
battle my way back home
to write toward rejection
an artificial poem that
will not transplant from
brain to page
but what would I do
otherwise
wander the house
(I have done this)
yap with my shadow
my constant companion
in mutual mockery
dread the mailbox
fear every email
go mad with longing
talk to the cat
then listen to its answers
where is your promise
except for one day
nullity forestalled.

Of course this is theft of an indeterminate sort. I enjoy lifting. It
stretches me when nothing else is going on.
