Mark:
It strikes me that I may have left out a link here -- I was thinking of the
way in which Yiddish and (non-inflexional) Romany both import semantic
elements into a native (German, English) given grammatical system.
Dunno ...
I'd like to sign up to Alice Becker-Ho's view that that the entire range of
European cant -- Rottwelsch, coquillard, etc. -- derives from Rom. The
time-scale fits, but unfortunately, as far as I can make out, the words
themselves just don't.
Sad, that, but, when reality contradicts the lovely plausibility of things.
