Don't they use these for women in labour too?

Hi Rachael,
Whilst I agree that the gym ball may not be the best thing in the world
for safety and stability, it is actually the very idea that there is no
support there for her to rely upon. This means that her core muscles
have to be used to stabilise her and keep her upright. It is therefore
increasing her core stability and thus is becoming pain free.
From a safety point of view it is however a different matter. I would
suggest a risk assessment and review!
Neil

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Gym balls
Hi Guys,
This may be a strange posting but I am looking for any information you
people
may have.
I have a lady who has had longstanding back pain. Approx 1yr ago, I did
a
workstation on her and ordered her a new fully adjustable chair.
Recently, her
Chiropractor has advised her to use a gym ball to sit on at her
workstation
which caused me some concern.
Apparently she has been using it for 2 weeks and feels that her pain
levels
have drastically improved. I have concerns, as to me it makes her
unstable
and gives her no support what-so-ever and when considering both the DSE
regs and the HASAWA it is prob not the best thing she can sit on!
I have been seeing a Physio for my own back recently and she has given
me
some strengthening exercises to do to strengthen my inner core, this
being
similar to the effect of the gym ball. My client has been through this
already
and this is the only thing she can say that has helped.
Have any of you come across this situation before, if so how did you go
about
managing it?
Regards
Rachael
