We have access to an abandoned ironstone drift mine in Shropshire which
was worked on an early version of the longwall system (said to have been
developed in Shropshire). It is in shaly ground, which would not be
unusual, and this would have influenced the drilling method used. The
working face is only about 1m deep. The air is not very good.
