medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Madeleine:
Glad to pass on the information !
I do think that, in the case of the Netherlands, iconoclastic damage is to blame, especially the great iconoclasm of 1566. (But Hen no doubt knows more about this that I do) Bolsward, where many of these misericords are found, somehow survived this, probably because of its strong Catholic influence. The saints here only had their noses chopped off. Amsterdam was a fairly Catholic city as well, and that's where the other fine collection of misericords can be found (in the Oude Kerk). Some of the latter are actually modern replacements, not medieval.

You did indeed, Frans, and I forwarded it to my colleague, and she said wow, thanks - it really is a splendid site with lots of the subversion/inversion images she's looking for. (And we are both grateful for the English-language captions because of our shameful lack of linguistic skill.)
But we both still have the impression that there is more available in England (and Wales) for misericords in very ordinary parish churches. My instinct is that this may be (a) an accident of recording - the material is clearly there for France and northern Italy but not so much of it is on the web; and (b) an accident of survival - not so much iconoclastic damage at or after the Reformation as destruction during refurbishment.
Thanks to everyone who has produced examples online - my colleague is sincerely grateful.

I found the following website databese for Dutch misericords and choir
stalls:

Also of interest might be the following book:

Doing a web search for images of misericords for a colleague's class, I
realised that virtually everything that I found on line is from Britain.
Is this a reflection of reality, or am I looking in the wrong place?
(The colleague's main interest is in grotesque and subversive
misericords, broadly defined - animals preaching, overturning of social
order etc)
