I'm looking for some help and explanation found in a number of French
Bills of Lading which identify the nature of the merchandise, the
consignor and consignee, etc. Specifically in the charges for freight
there appears the phrase 'per ten per Cent Average'. A typical example
is:
'...... on paying for Freight the Sum of sixty five Livres per Ton
and ten per Cent Average.'
One variant is also found, ie: 'ten per Cent Ordinary Average.' Can
any one offer an explanation for these phrases. I initially thought it
may be 10% added to the freight charge, but that could have been added
on in the first place. The only other alternative I can envisage is an
addition of 10% of the value of the merchandise, wholesale or retail.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
