Last week I asked the list " Do you have one bib record or separate
records for your print and electronic books"
I had 17 responses to my question
Two libraries who replied had a single bib record for both. One
library is still deciding their policy. One library does both and the
rest have separate records. Several libraries had started off with one
bib record but found it not feasible to maintain
Comments included:
“One record can be simpler for the user, but two works better for the
library dealing with them”
“They're easier to maintain and easier to delete if necessary and we
can have a specialised search on the catalogue just for eBooks.”
“If we were starting again, I think we would almost certainly prefer
to keep print and electronic separate”
"We use separate records - partly for administrative reasons but also
because we use format searching and format icons on our OPAC.
"You can't put "[electronic resource]" on a print record! So we now
maintain two title records - one for print and one for electronic.

Many thanks to all who replied. I think I will be proposing to
colleagues that we revert back to separate records. We did indeed start
with two because our first main collection was a big NoWAL consortium
deal and I wanted to be able to delete in bulk if the deal came to an
end. I do still have concerns about changing our policy because it is
“easier” for library staff (well me!) but I also think it will
make the library catalogue more accurate
